Milestones and Mindfulness

Yesterday, as the day wound down, I reflected on where I am with this whole… “Hey, I’m gonna write a novel.”…thing.

And for the first time since starting this journey, my heart swelled large enough to trigger unforeseen tears. I felt a sense of pride. A sense of success. And a cathartic wave of accomplishment.

This past weekend, Beyond the Masks was sent to the editor for the final edit package. The story (itself) is finally complete. What does this mean?

Well, it isn’t ready for a release just yet. But when I sent off the manuscript to my editor in January, I thought it was complete, the main parts of the story that is. But this was editing round number one. Developmental Edits. These edits pinpoint glaring changes and suggestions that will aid in telling the right story. To tell the story the way the characters want you to.

But when I hit send on that email, somewhere deep inside I knew the story was incomplete. It felt like when you leave the house and say, “Am I forgetting something?” That agitation nagged me. But I had taken Shane, Jacob and Gavin’s story as far as I could at that time.

When I received the edit package back, the notes and conversations I had with my editor opened so many locked doors. She guided me to where these characters were actually heading. She said, “I just gave you the key, you’re the one who unlocked and opened the door.” But without her key, I would not have found the path to a powerful story.

With that said, as I drove home last night a feeling of joy overwhelmed me. Never have I stopped to smell the roses in order to enjoy the process of something. You see, I’m a sprinter not a long distance runner. And in learning to pace myself I have become mindful of the small successes. Enjoying the mile markers is almost better than the end game. Remembering how you got there makes the finish line so much sweeter.

So here’s to the next “chapter” of Beyond the Masks and this “I’m gonna write a novel.”…thing.  Because it has taught me so much more about myself, where I’m headed and the impossible things I can achieve.

Coming Soon 2017…

Much Love~

December is an amazing time of year.  Christmas and the holidays and snow (if you are lucky!). Santa and snowmen...the list goes on.

The last month of the year has become an even more exciting time for me...

A friend once told me, "Do one thing everyday that scares you." It takes you out of your comfort zone and helps you realize your true potential and heck...it ends up the "scary thing" wasn't as frightening as you thought. :)

My SCARY thing will be to do a 30 Day Writing Challenge in the month of December. Well, really 31... The challenge will revolve around romance short stories that I hope you will enjoy.

  • Will these stories be literary masterpieces? Hell no!
  • Will they have editing mistakes? Probably!
  • Why do it?  To strengthen the creative muscle brain! And who knows...perhaps I will come up with a future novella or series from the characters yet to be seen!

It will start December 1 and run till the new year. I have found 2 great resources to help me gain traction and ideas. Bryn Donovan has a Master List of Romance Conflicts and Mindy Klasky has a great list of traditional Romance Tropes I will be using to aid in this challenge. Lastly, I will set some ground rules to help me stay motivated and challenged along the way.

Ground Rules

1. Each morning I will do a live feed on my Facebook page (another layer of scary...) and randomly select a trope and a romance conflict.  This will allow the story to marinate in my brain over the course of the day.

2. Planning and plotting. I find I am traditionally a pantser writer but in this case planning and plotting will become necessary to get the story written.

  • pantser is someone who, “flies by the seat of their pants,” meaning they don't plan out anything, or plan very little.

3. Max 2 hours of writing time!

4. Editing to 1,500 words. (Yikes - Not a lot to work with but it will hone the craft on creating a defined character arc and story conflict/resolution. No one likes a rambling short story.)

Join me in the month of December for some crazy, wacky, humorous love stories. Visit my Facebook page for morning live feeds and please comment any suggestions!  I would love to incorporate YOUR ideas into these little ditties. <3

Much Love,

50 Shades of Waaaaaayy!

It had been five years since picking up a book since college when this baby came my way.  I was never a reader and was notorious for picking up a book and quitting half way through.  I suppose it was due to the mandatory content I was required to read and being naturally disinterested.

That all changed when my dear friend

Make the Ordinary Extraordinary

One thing I have learned over the last year is observance.  I’ve always been an analytical person but recently started filing away little moments in my head that on the surface appear commonplace.

For example…

Tamarind

Pacing up and down the aisle I was in search of a spice a Mediterranean dish called for. Tamarind. Thoroughly searching each rack I huffed in annoyance.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I murmured. “Stupid store.”
It was becoming apparent my dinner plans for one were going to change. Looking down at my basket full of items specific to the meal I had planned it appeared it would be grilled chicken and broccoli again. Running my hand through my hair I sighed in defeat.
“Excuse me,” a woman’s voice said behind me.
“Oh, sorry,” I apologized as if I had done something wrong. Why do we do that? I quickly pondered shaking off the thought. Shifting back on my feet I watched the woman choose a container of garlic powder.
I could feel my eyes narrow when they caught the side of her face. She looked familiar but it was hard to tell. Her blonde streaked hair fell forward only allowing me a glance of her creamy pale skin and petite nose.

Once Upon a Time

Such a great way to start a story right?  The fairy tales we grew up with always started that way. And when you read the words... "Once upon a time..." you KNEW the story was going to whisk you away.

So here is my once upon a time...
